On the streets of Rome, pimp Accattone leads an existence on the margins of society: prostitution, hustling, exploitation. When his prostitute Maddalena is arrested, the pimp's fortunes dwindle and he is forced to confront his existence.

The feature directorial debut of filmmaker-writer-provocateur Pier Paolo Pasolini turned the film world upside down with its raw and elegant images of Roman street life, seemingly signaling a new direction for Italian cinema: neo-neorealism.
