In a high-tech future, detective Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) hunts down four fugitive replicants: robots barely distinguishable from real human beings.

The film marked the US breakthrough for Dutch actor Rutger Hauer in 1982. He plays Roy Batty, a human clone (a so-called replicant) pursued by Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), an officer (Blade Runner) specialising in terminating replicants.

Scott's Blade Runner is one of the most important science fiction films of all time. Laden with characteristics of 1940s film noir – such as the hero's dubious moral motives, a femme fatale, and naturally, ominous casting shadows – Blade Runner met a rather lukewarm reception at the time, but went on to exert a massive influence on today's wave of sci-fi blockbusters.

Vangelis composed the film's rousing soundtrack.
