An intimate documentary about a motley crew of Nigerian genre filmmakers and their arduous journey to the top. In the Nigerian city of Kaduna, a group of brothers, sisters and friends make sci-fi and superhero films on their mobile phones. They build a following on YouTube, and when J.J. Abrams sends them a crate of professional equipment, their lives change dramatically.

New Zealand filmmaker Pietra Brettkelly meets the group – 'The Critics' – when they are already immensely popular on YouTube. Abrams' gift gives them the chance to think bigger and move from Kaduna (also known as 'The Crocodile City') to the capital, Abuja. But the move leads to friction within the group, made all the worse when they also have to deal with corruption and police violence. Crocodile, an intimate documentary packed with footage from The Critics' own work, shows the arduous journey to the top for a colourful array of genre talents determined to make films no matter what.
