Downtown

Three young friends throw themselves into Amsterdam's hedonistic nightlife scene until the then-mysterious AIDS epidemic makes its entrance, casting a shadow over their lives. Thirty-two years later – during the 2021 lockdown – they try to breathe new life into their friendship.

Amsterdam, 1986. In the flamboyant nightclub Downtown, Ronnie, Lennart and Bas seem untouchable. Their tight-knit friendship revolves around nights filled with freedom, desire and excess, against the backdrop of a city in full swing. But when the first rumours about AIDS start to circulate, the mood in their world slowly changes.

While Ronnie cautiously tries to look ahead, Lennart and Bas keep clinging to a life that seems endless – until Bas suddenly vanishes without a trace. Over thirty years later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ronnie unexpectedly spots Bas on the metro. He decides to host a dinner party with Lennart attending as well: their first meeting in years.
