Nunsploitation with vampires, what more could you want?

Spain, 1755. Rebellious Ana is sent to a convent against her will. Here she discovers that some of the nuns are suffering from a mysterious illness. An independent priest teaches Anna about a dark legend: the bloodthirsty Upiro.

A take on nunsploitation we haven't seen before. Together with screenwriter Elena Muñoz, director Óscar Martín paints a vivid picture of the 18th century – part fiction, part based on fact. The 'Upiór' legend is real (it literally means 'bloodsucker') and refers to a kind of primal vampire from Slavic folklore. What's more, there were genuine mysterious occurrences surrounding vampirism in the south of Spain back then. But the film also questions traditional gender roles for women – particularly how they're expected to be modest, submissive and chaste – highlighting the clash between religion and science that still rages today.
